Understanding Your Nervous System and Its Holistic Connection
The scientific explanation of your nervous system is defined by a complex network of nerves and cells that carry messages to and from your brain and spinal cord to various parts of your body. It controls everything from your heartbeat to your thoughts and emotions.
The nervous system has two main parts: the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS), which consists of nerves that branch off from the spinal cord and extend to all parts of the body.
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a key component of the PNS and is crucial for our discussion today. The ANS controls involuntary body functions like heartbeat, digestion, and breathing. It's further divided into the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), which prepares your body for "fight or flight" during stress, and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), which promotes "rest and digest" functions.
Otherwise, it’s your sympathetic nervous system that triggers your body’s stress response, while your PARAsympathetic nervous system helps you calm down and return to a balanced state. Think of the parasympathetic system as a parachute, grounding and guiding you back to safety.
Holistically, your nervous system is deeply connected to your mind, body, and spirit. When your nervous system is balanced and regulated, you experience a state of calm, peace, and alignment. This state allows you to access your intuition, feel connected to your higher self, and live in harmony with your desires. However, when your nervous system is dysregulated, you might feel anxious, stressed, or disconnected, making it difficult to manifest and sustain the life you want.
Regulated vs. Unregulated Nervous System: Mind, Body, and Spirit
It's important to recognize the signs of a regulated versus an unregulated nervous system holistically and how it can affect the mind, body, and/or spirit.
Mind:
Regulated: Calm, focused, able to think clearly, and respond rather than react to situations.
Unregulated: Anxious, scattered thoughts, difficulty concentrating, and quick to anger or frustration.
Body:
Regulated: Relaxed muscles, steady heartbeat, regular breathing, and good digestion.
Unregulated: Tense muscles, rapid heartbeat, shallow breathing, and digestive issues.
Spirit:
Regulated: Feeling connected to your higher self, aligned with your purpose, and experiencing inner peace.
Unregulated: Feeling disconnected, lost, or stuck, out of alignment with a sense of inner turmoil.
By learning to recognize these signs, you can take proactive steps to bring your nervous system back into balance.
Childhood: The Blueprint of Your Nervous System
The foundation of your nervous system's response to the world is determined in childhood. From birth, your environment plays a crucial role in shaping how your nervous system functions. If you grew up in a loving, supportive environment, your nervous system likely learned to respond to stress healthily, enabling you to remain calm and resilient in challenging situations.
This might make you able to feel good about overcoming any challenging situation that could come your way. You could have had a stable foundation of how to navigate life most optimally and never feel unable/unworthy to get what you want out of life.
For example, a child raised in a home where emotions are expressed and managed healthily might develop a nervous system that can regulate itself efficiently. Such a person might experience lower stress levels and find it easier to return to a state of calm after a stressful event.
On the other hand, if you grew up in a high-stress environment where there was constant tension, unpredictability, or even trauma, your nervous system might have learned to remain in a state of hyperarousal. This means your body is constantly on high alert, ready to fight or flee, even when there is no immediate danger. This could manifest as hypervigilance and expecting negative outcomes in situations. As an adult, this could also manifest as chronic anxiety, difficulty relaxing, or a tendency to overreact to stress.
For instance, if a child grows up in a household where financial instability is a constant source of stress, they might develop a nervous system that is hypersensitive to any perceived threat to their security. This could lead to behaviors like hoarding money or constantly worrying about finances, even in situations where they are financially stable, this is what their nervous system is used to, and will seek out anyway for it to reflect in the external, physical world.
The Energetic Connection: Vibrating at the Level of Your Desires
Internal has said this all the time throughout our resource posts- “we are all energetic beings, and the energy we emit directly influences what we attract into our lives”.
If you've already read some of our posts, you're already familiar with this concept. The idea is that to attract what you want in life, you must vibrate at the same energetic frequency as that which you desire.
For example, if you want to attract more abundance into your life, you need to embody the energy of abundance. This means feeling abundant, thinking abundant thoughts, and taking actions that align with an abundant mindset. If you don't vibrate at the level of abundance, you'll find it difficult to attract and sustain wealth because you're not in energetic alignment with it, this is the law of attraction.
However, if your nervous system is dysregulated, it can be challenging to maintain the energy needed to attract your desires. A dysregulated nervous system might keep you in a state of fear, anxiety, or scarcity, which are low-vibrational states. These states can block the flow of abundance and keep you stuck in patterns that are out of alignment with your true desires.
This is why you hear “higher your vibrations” all the time in the spiritual community.
The Crucial Connection: Nervous System Regulation and Manifestation
So, how does all of this tie together?
Imagine someone who grew up in a chaotic and stressful environment. Their nervous system is used to being in a state of survival, constantly scanning for threats and reacting to stress. Now, imagine this person wakes up one day and suddenly has the life of their dreams—financial stability, loving relationships, and a peaceful environment.
While this might sound ideal, their nervous system, which is so conditioned to chaos and struggle, might perceive this new, peaceful life as unfamiliar and unsafe. As a result, their body might react by triggering stress responses, even when there is no real danger. This could lead to self-sabotaging behaviors, such as creating unnecessary conflict or worrying excessively about things going wrong. The nervous system's inability to handle this new reality could ultimately pull them back into old, familiar patterns of chaos and struggle.
This is why regulating your nervous system is so important. If your nervous system is not aligned with the life you desire, you might find it difficult to sustain your manifestations. Your body and mind might resist the new reality because it feels unsafe or unfamiliar, even if it's exactly what you've been working towards.
To truly achieve the life you deserve, you must first act as if you already have it. This means internally feeling that you are worthy of your desires and aligning your nervous system with this new reality. When your nervous system is regulated, you can maintain the energetic frequency needed to attract and sustain your desires. Remember, life is a mindset (internal) game—not a physical (external) one.
Why Your Internal State Will ALWAYS Matter!
Healing your internal world is so important and connects to every aspect of becoming the best version of yourself. Regulating your nervous system is an essential part of this process because it’s a deeply internal journey that begins with mindset shifts. While your past may have conditioned you to live a certain way, it doesn’t mean you’re held at gunpoint to it. Change is always possible, and it starts with a decision to create a better internal world. Just because you’re used to something doesn’t mean it has to define your future. By looking within and choosing to live differently, you can break free from old patterns and unlock the life you truly deserve.
