Why True Self-Care Isn't Spending Any Money!

How to Navigate the Consumerism Trap

By clicking on this blog post, like most of the people in the world, you aspire to be happy, healthy, and abundant. Having this realization comes with you wanting more for yourself!

In this post, we are going to eliminate some of the self-care myths you've been told about while entering your holistic healing and wellness journey.

What we want you to take away from this post is to uncover what self-care truly is and understand the key benefits.  The Internal community wants to help you create a self-care ritual that is specific to YOUR own journey/needs. Everyone is different, so what one person's self-care looks like might be different from the others. As long as that person is getting the true benefits.

Let's begin and debunk some self-care myths together.

What Even is Self-Care?

By definition, self-care is “the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one's own health.”That could look like taking a long bath after a stressful day of work, going out in nature, and feeling the crisp air breezing throughout your body, this all depends on the person. Essentially, self-care is anything that makes you feel better, gives you energy, and charges you up like a battery.

Our goal at “The Internal Guide” is to help you nurture your inner world which in return reflects back to you in the physical world.

What Self-Care is NOT

Being an “internal person" typically refers to someone who is introspective, reflective, and values their own thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

It often implies that such a person tends to prioritize the internal things in life, such as personal growth, self-awareness, and emotional development, over external factors like social status or material successes.

When you become more internal you start to value things that come from within, not without.

Living in a world that values external successes versus internal, it's easy to get bombarded with misinformation that suggests what false self-care should look like. This could be your favorite influencer telling you their 20-step skincare routine you need to buy if you want to take better care of yourself. This could also look like an Amazon wishlist with 40 different self-care items you feel the need to buy because becoming “That Girl” is the new trend.

While yes, a Gua Sha can help your face look less puffy and in return make you look more awake, it's not the end all be all for self-care. Self-care is doing things that truly charge you up and make you feel better.

Have you noticed why people with shopping addictions find it hard to stop? It's because they are trying to fill a void with external things that won't bring them true joy and happiness. And you won't know what true joy and happiness look like if you don't sit with yourself and ask “What is it that I want in life?”, “Who do I want to become?”, “What does success look like to me?”.  Sorry to say but that new handbag can't talk to you and tell you the answers.

It's up to you to seek what you value in life. Remember earlier that everyone is different, we all came here with our quirks, interests, and talents. This applies to our inner worlds as well. We're not saying that you can't buy a bag and not be happy, we are just saying to truly ask yourself if this is what you want. Ask yourself “How is this an investment to me?” If you constantly find yourself looking for the next new product to get, you should maybe stop and sit with yourself. Ask yourself if you are trying to feel something that you believe you cant give to yourself. And then take a look at that item and see if you truly want it. The next impulse buy you make, ask yourself these four questions.

  1. Is this a true investment to me?

  2. How can this benefit my life?

  3. Will I want this in a month?

  4. Am I looking to feel something or do I actually want this?

We want whoever is reading this to know that here at “The Internal Guide” we are not telling you to be 100% an internalizer and that being only internal is the way to go. That's impossible, if that were the case we wouldn't have all these external things around us. Nothing in life is black or white. We are human beings, which means we are multifaceted and with this comes balancing multiple parts of us. It's never good to be 100% one way, otherwise we wouldn't be human.

Our mission at “Internal” is simple, we want to help people become their best selves by doing things that speak to their soul, authentic nature, and who they uniquely came here to be. We have to do external things sometimes because we live in a physical world. We aren't asking you to be a magician and change completely, but rather help inspire you to become your highest version. This varies from person to person. Only you know what this looks like, no one is in your head 24/7, sees the world you do, and has the same experiences in life as you. We all have a unique footprint. And to know what our purpose is is to look within.

How To Create The Ultimate Self-Care Ritual Unique To You

Okay, now you know what self-care is and what it's not. So how do you go on from here? We want you to read these actionable next steps and try to incorporate them into your life as much as possible. Try to think of actions that can charge you up and bring you joy, not actions that only feel good in the moment and after a while fade out. Remember, changing takes time and it's okay to have your slip-ups, as long as you recognize that you want to change and do better habits that align with who you want to become.

Identify Your Needs and Preferences: Take time to reflect on what activities genuinely make you feel rejuvenated and fulfilled. Create a Consistent Routine: Establish a regular schedule for your self-care activities. Consistency is key to reaping long-term benefits. Set aside dedicated time each day or week to engage in activities that recharge you. This could involve waking up earlier to meditate, scheduling regular workout sessions, or dedicating an evening each week to unwind with a favorite hobby.

Practice Mindfulness and Presence: Approach your self-care routine with mindfulness and presence. Fully engage in each activity without distractions or rushing through them. Whether you're taking a walk, practicing yoga, or enjoying a hot bath, be fully present in the moment and savor the experience. This helps amplify the benefits and enhances your overall well-being.

Evaluate and Adjust Regularly: Periodically assess how your self-care routine is impacting your health and happiness. Notice which activities bring you the most joy and rejuvenation, and which ones may need adjustment or replacement. Your needs and preferences may change over time, so be open to adapting your routine to best support your evolving wellness journey.

By prioritizing activities that truly nourish your mind, body, and soul, you can create a self-care routine that not only brings you joy but also contributes significantly to your overall health and wellness and that's what self-care TRULY is.
